Hi –
This week in Science, in honor of Tu B’Shevat, we learned some things about trees.
First we talked about the different parts of a tree – the leaves, branches, trunk and roots.
Then we compared pieces of bark from different kinds of trees.
The bark from the pine tree was rough,
but the Sycamore tree barkwas smooth.
This big piece of bark was very bumpy on the outside,
but smooth on the inside.
We also looked at what is inside a tree trunk. A slice of a tree trunk like this one is called a ‘tree cookie.’
The tree cookie was very smooth in the middle (thanks to Morah Elaine’s power sander) but had very rough bark on the outside.
Then I dressed up as a tree in order to review all of the parts.
First, roots over the boots… Roots are like drinking straws for the tree.
A trunk with bark:
A crown of leaves, some branches and fruit…
Everybody sing…’Twigs, branches, bark
and roots, bark and roots…’
Thanks to Morah Michelle and Morah Ellen for a great idea ~ Every tree needs a cardinal that sings when you squeeze it!
Let’s start again…’Twigs, branches, bark
and roots, bark and roots…’
Happy Tu B’Shevat!
See you next week,
Morah Elaine
